Damn it's hard to believe that lead-acid batteries are still being used for cycle lights in this day and age :-)

Rather retrofit your light with Li-ion batteries two Li-Ion cells in series will give you 8.4 V at max charge which can be a bit to much for the light but a diode or two in series should sort you out.

You can buy a battery pack from extreme lights ( 2 sets of 2 x 18650 Li-ion cells in series)

Or you can buy 18650 cells and a holder from EBay / gumtree / bid or buy obviously lower quality but at R30 a battery you can build your own pack for less than R150, remember to get a 8.4 V charger as well.

Or look at running some 3V cells in series to get to your 6V, and then boost Ah by adding sets of these in parallel.  You should be able to get all the stuff you need from Communica or similar

Hi Hubbers

Please can you advise me where I can find a replacement battery for my Knightlite bike lights, please see photo for battery specifications as I am positive there is a generic unit out there as I can't find a Knightlite battery anywhere. Preferably a shop in Cape Town please.

Thank you

That is a cheap VRLA rechargeable battery. Any battery store specialising in automotive battries should be able to replace it with something similar. Also, security stores and electronics places.

You may not find the exact same casing but the key thing is the 6V. Replacing with another 6V VRLA battery of similar capacity (4.5 Ah) will enable your existing charger to be used.

If you change to different chemistry suchs as Li-ion or NiMH cells then you'll need different charger too.

Changing chemistry also gives a voltage compatibility issue. NiMH cells are 1.2V nominal so you need sets of 5. You'll have make these packs up.

Li-ion cells like the popular 18650 type are 3.6V nominal so you need sets of 2 but these give 7.2V nominal output. If you are running Halogen bulbs in your light this higher voltage will make them run hotter and brighter but will also shorten their life drastically.
