Converting a road bike to SS advice needed

Hi guys and girls

As some of you might remember, I was In a crash 12 weeks ago. Had a quick look the other day and things did not seem so bad on the bike.

 

I started fixing tonight, and things are worse than I thought.

 

The chain seems damaged, 4 of the 9 cogs on the cassette are bend as well as my derailer.

 

I think with me pedaling the first cog bend and then slipped causing me to fall... and bending the others. 

Not the point.....

 

Will a 9 speed chain fit on a 8 speed cog?

 

I have been thinking about going single speed for very very long, and this may just be reason to start.

39t 16t I ride the cradle quite a bit.

are you planning on using a chain tensioner, or going without one ?

 

I have vertical drop outs so its a bit of in issue as I dont want to use a chain tensioner. Want to keep things clean - but not sure about the chain tension.

at this stage things will be as cheap as possible. so will first try without a tensioner.
