Bike transport by Bus

Sepia

Recommended Posts

I am wanting to get on a bus with my bike and get off at a destination in order to ride back.

Bus companies will not take a bike unless it is dismantled.

Means forfeiting a box and taking too many tools?

Anyone have an idea around this?

I have seen busses loaded with oxen, PnP trolleys, poultry etc but they will not take a bike.

Maybe they want to bleed the cyclist even more thinking they must be affluent?

free cardboard bike box from a bike shop and a multitool

put bike in box with a bit of bubble wrap etc and multitool in your pocket

ride bus (bike in box as luggage)

assemble bike - chuck box in suitable recycle bin

ride home

worked for me

Greyhound prefers one to box the bike, but the folk loading the bikes at the buss are not insistent. I just did a trip where I rode from my home to Park Station (JHB). They loaded my bicycle, without hassle and it was not boxed. They will charge you an additional fee that seems open to interpretation. This was R 200.00 from JHB to Volksrust.

You should expect to waive any breakage issues, should your bike not be boxed.

On my way back i caught the Greyhound in Ladysmith. Again, hassle free. This time the cost was only R 100.00. Small price to pay for the convenience.
