When I start putting force onto my pedal it feels like the chain slips because it suddenly goes down and makes a loud noise. Can somebody please recommend a fix to this problem. the bike is fine on straights and on downhills. It also does this when i start of.

Replace Chain and cassette. (If the chainring is still OK you won't have to replace it- let the shop check it for you to be sure). But never replace just cassette or just chain. Both at the same time every time. Your problem is most definitely worn components. Clean and oil the new chain and cassette often and it will last a hell of a lot longer. Rule of thumb is around 2500 km for lifespan of components like chain and cassette.

Casette does not look very healthy.  Does this happen in a specific gear or overall?

That cassette is stuffed.  You don't need a cassette checker to see that!

The chain will be toast as well, so you'll need a new one too.

I'd hazard a guess that the front chainrings are poked too.

Full drive train replacement I'm afraid.

is it ok to put an 8 speed cassete in if i have a 6 speed in now and a 6 speed shifter

No not OK.  Shifters are indexed and only move to preset distances for a 6 speed.

I count at least eight sprockets on your cassette in the photo?
