Yes the Outback is Karkloofs 60k route. Follow the Outback trail sign boards. Just check carefully because the first 4km are shared and so dont miss the turn off to Outback trails. Take enough water if its hot as there is no water  out there. Some big climbs if you not used to them so be prepared with some nutrition as well.

Another heads up .. apparently there is a broken bridge on The Gauntlet (Karkloof Trails) so exercise some caution.  Not sure if that section has been closed or if the repairs have taken place already.. but rather be careful and check it out first

As a sidenote ..

Puffadder Pass and No Balls are scheduled to be cleared next week.. so if you going that way excuse any trail debris. Last 2 weeks or so have been dedicated to bridge repair

Hey Griff

Thanks for all the hard work.  I saw coming down Cathrins and Hai bo the trail is barely discernible due to pine needles. I thought for a long weekend this trail might be used a lot by visitors. I know you very busy but if you do get a gap maybe the guys can give it a sweep. Pity after the enduro it was nice and clean but I think the wind brought a lot of debris down.

thanks for all the tips and help so far guys.

We'll be coming down in November, should most of the clearing be done by then? or does it take place all year round?

Trail maint and clearing is a weekly job.The type of maintenance depends on the season.. summer is mostly brush cutting and winter is mostly trail repair. 2 local guys are employed by the club to do this work. That's where all the trail fees go..

Did lots of riding this weekend in Howick and some in Karkloof. As always the trails and routes are just awesome. There was a lot of debris etc but it was part of the fun. Puffadder remains "hard work" and I had the privilege to do No Balls yesterday after the trail was cleaned....thanks for a fantastic job to the club.

For the guys going for a weekend and only having time for 2 or 3 rides I will recommend doing:

1) Howick 30 km route,

2) Karkloof 30 km route and then

3) Combination of the above or perhaps the Karkloof Outride.

Do not let the distances fool you, there are no free kilometers in that part of the world!

If you come down to kzn and don't do howick you have wasted petrol. In my opinion it is significantly better than karkloof... And was reminded of the fact this last weekend. The big tip is to get Blondie or chainsaw or someone else local to take you out and they will take you on rides that will be forever etched in your memory

I couldn't find the start of the Howick trails at first... then some friendly locals showed me the routes. Wow!!! Definitely some of the best trails I've ever ridden. Its just a bit wierd that they're not one-directional. You can just go in whatever direction you please.

And then Karkloof... even better than Howick in my opinion! Sections like fawlty towers, bruiser's burn, free fall... and then sid vicious... bloody brilliant! I had to ride some of those again and again! They have the perfect mix of very technical and flowing single track (and jumps!) to keep you smiling all day.

I think i might quit my job and move down there
