Scott Spark - Max Size Chainring?

Guys, what is the largest size chainring that would physically fit on the current model 29er Scott Spark in a SRAM 1x direct mount setup before it touches the chainstay?

well nino has run up to 38t so that should be fine maybe 40t as well

But why do you want to go so big?

i've run a 36 on a 2015 spark premium with loads of clearance.

Thanks for responding BaGearA. Good to hear you fitted a 36T! I also thought of Nino's bike, but wasn't sure whether his frame is 100% standard.

No, I wish I had the legs for a massive chainring, but let's just say I would be doing a lot of walking....

I am basically just trying to establish whether this is something to be concerned about when considering fitting 1x12 on the Scott Spark. I didn't think it was, but became concerned after reading the review of the 1x12 in FullSuss, in which he raised the issue of some frames not being able to fit a large enough chainring to really reap the benefits. My calc shows that for my type of riding a 34T oval or 36T oval would be ideal with the 1x12. As long as those two fit, I'll be a happy camper.

What are you currently running? Take that, and add 7.5mm to the radius for every 2t increase of the chainring.

Say you are running 32t, a 38t will require 3 x 7.5mm = 22.5 mm of radius increase required.

The long-axis of the 36T oval will be equal to a 38t

Thanks Koei! The oval chainring I want to use is from Absolute Black. Their chainrings have a slight dome shape in order to optimise chain line, but that seems to bring the edge of the chainring closer to the chainstay. Not sure? Anyone with experience in fitting Absolute Black oval chainrings on a Scott Spark?

I'd say take an oval 36 and take it from there , if it does not work you won't struggle to resell it

But very few people want a 38t oval so that you probably won't resell.

For a 29er, 36t and 38t is pretty big and you need the legs for it (or a route with mild gradients).

12 speed => 50t rear => very doable.

Actually - going off topic :offtopic:  - I'd recommend 38t regular:

38(f) @ 50® is almost exactly the same as 32(f) @ 42® - which is the most common setup for 11speed setups...

I'm just wondering how many links you'd require for that chain...

Thanks again Koei and JXV! I think I'll start off with a 34T Oval and see how it goes - I did the math and seriously doubt whether I'd be able to push anything larger than a 36T on a typical race like the recent 75km Burger for example.

BTW - I spoke to my LBS who is a Scott and Absolute Black dealer and he recons an Absolute Black 34T Oval is the largest size Oval in their range that would fit on a Spark.
