I would HIGHLY recommend the road from caledon thru hemel and aarde valley to onrus, as we rode it in the beginning of the year (in the opposite direction).

 

The road is incredibly beautiful, quiet and has recently been tarred all the way, so the surface is magnificent.  

 

The other option from villiersdorp is to ride to Greyton - there is a gravel stretch that we took but this can be avoided (i think).  The road over the pass and then down to the sonderend river / valley is beautiful and very quiet.  Greyton is a lovely place to overnight.

 

BTW, our full route was hermanus - onrus - hemel & aarde - caledon - greyton - genadendal - helderstorrm - villiersdorp - worcester - wolselely - tulbach - gouda - moorreesburg - darling  - yzerfontein.

Thank you all. I thought around Cape Town might be safer than Malawi, but it seems it is not....

Do you mean you get robbed during day hours? Does that mean the road is quite empty or that people just let you get robbed.

We have lived in Malawi and there it is safe to ride a bike as long as it is light and you stick to the villages / secondary roads.

But I understand that is not possible?

 

In certain places near to informal settlements there is a real possibility of being robbed at gun point during the day while people are around but this is limit to a short parts of the proposed routes.

 

Chat to a local and find out about the crime hot spots and try avoid them.
