Which beginner bike would you choose?

The greatest thing about buying a decent 2nd hand bike is: If you don't enjoy it as much as you thought, sell it.

If you considering a certain 2nd hand buy, be it the hub to olx etc, just paste it here and you'll very quickly get a pretty good examination.

My rule of thumb for entry level bikes is anything lower than 9-speed gearing on the back, stay the heck away. So "21 speed" "24 speed" is a no no. As mentioned before you'll end up hating your bike due to how often you need to fix and adjust things.

The GT link above seems really decent.

Agreed on the saving up for something decent.

Just a quick "search" on Merida and I came up with a few suggestions, I did NOT go through all the suggestions below in detail and I know they are not all your SIZE, but it will give you some idea of what is out there if you take your time and at the end buy what you want and what YOU are happy with.

- also they are mixed 26, 27.5 and 29" sizes, but just to give you some idea.

- also "search" other makes to get other ideas.

- I would ALSO stick to minimum 9-speed cassette (but 10-speed would be lekker)

- If possible try and budget for a 27,5 or 29-er...but you get some sweet deals on 26"

Hi All,

Thanks for all the responses and links.

I found out my dad has a Volcan XC2 26" (L) he's willing to sell me, the bike has been valued at around 30k at a bike shop.

He's willing to sell it to me for 8.5k, sounds like an amazing deal.

So I'm most likely going to get 8.5k together and then go for that.

I'll try get the component specs and post them here

How tall are you? If you are supposed to get an XL then the L is going to give you a horrible feeling and horrible back pains!

Sounds like a good deal but rather go to a bike shop where you can get advice on the correct size frame for your height and body structure before committing to anything.

And if you are tall I would rather go for 29er....

buy the one with the best resell value...because you are going to up grade...a bike is a bike when you are starting out.

if any have an air fork and not a spring fork...i would be choosing the air fork...if not check which one can be upgraded to an air fork without using an adapter.

otherwise find a weekend job to help pay for the pleasures in life.
