Disk Brakes - advice pls

I haven't been in the bike since the Fedhealth race, but yesterday noticed that my rear brake is 'spongy'...

Need to grip it really tight (against the grip) to get any traction and gradually slow down even from a slow speed. Would hate to know what would happen if I was going fast.

Any hints or suggestions as to what to do? New to the disk brake/MTB scene...

If you can pull in the lever all the way, it probably means that you don't have enough brake fluid in the system. As mentioned above, one would need to bleed or top it up or  adjust the lever. Some systems allow you to adjust the lever to a certain extent. If you don't have the bleed kit take it to your LBS.

If you can't pull the lever in all the way and the brake pads are clamping, but not stopping the disk turning around, it probably means that your brake pads are contaminated with oil or something. The solution in this case is to take them out, wash them and the disks down with alcohol and sand (only the pads) down a little with light sand paper.

But have a look on Youtube. If you search for the make of your brake, there are tons of legendary geeks showing you how to do it step by step.

It would not be stupid to try it yourself, but have a look at the youtube clips and see what tools you need and bleed kit.

I bought one for my XT brakes and my dropper post and after watching one or two clips, have done it all myself ever since. Bike maintenance is pretty straight forward, you just need some specialized tools and youtube. Once in a while you may need to send the bike into a pro for a once over, but you could take care of most of it yourself.

Its relatively easy to bleed brakes but you must have a bleed kit. Watch a few videos and print out some instructions to refere to.

Perhpad take it this time to the lbs which will cost about R200 and then look at doing it next time.
