I want do an out ride from Cape Town to Melkbos and back before work.

Is it safe to cycle on the M14 stretch between Big Bay and Melkbos in the early hours?

Looking on google maps, there is not much of a shoulder!

Anyone use this route often?

That road is as safe as any road around Cape Town. Its not that busy and generally pretty safe.

Just make sure you have proper lights and you should be fine.

When I was living in Melkbos I did a almost daily commute to Century City and it was fine. On a road bike. If you do MTB, there is a small patch of gravel next to the road. Don't worry too much, people are quite used to cyclists on that stretch. Be mindful of course, because that doesn't stop them from driving like idiots.

And what Bankie99 says, proper lights are important there. Flashing backlight.
