Anybody know which event in South Africa is a qualifier for the world champs for 2017.

In 2015 it was the Tsogo Sun Amashova (UCI masters road world championships 2016).

It's all about money. So... masters and vets if you don't have the funds to fly to another country and try your skills in qualifying for the UCI Granfondo World Series. Tuff luck! It is so sad we may never see these words again “Team S A scores trio of medals at Masters World Champs”

So much for promoting sport for the poor. You have to be mega wealthy to go to worlds. Just because CSA won't spend the cash to make a South African event a qualifier. #disgraceful.

Well, you have to pay everything yourself anyway if you qualify. So its a thing for the wealthy anyway.

Only problem is, now you have to pay twice for your trip... once to go and qualify and again for the actual event. Unless you take a loooooong vacation in France next year.

It's also not the CSA... it's actually Sports and Recreation South Africa (SRSA) who are the culprits who decided not to pay the R350 000 registration fee to UCI anymore.

Thanks for the correction.

I actually think the event and the city should pay part of the qualifier cost. Amashova themself said more riders, also from outside SA, came to ride especially for qualifying. Then it's hotels, rentals, holiday perhaps. But I don't have specific numbers.

Either Jozi/94, Durban/ama or Cape Town/ctct could easily do it with a sponsor helping perhaps?

If it is a lack of funds, I am sure all domestic licence holders would pay a small extra entry fee, or add an additional fee onto all those wanting to compete for entry to the UCI world championships.
I am open to correction on this, but Amashova had 10,000 riders this year. The Cape Town cycle tour has three times more at 38,000 riders. And that is not to mention the many other road events in South Africa.
Is Africa now going to be left behind again when this year alone we had three medals in the masters track world championships?
So if Sports and Recreation are the culprits, they need to catch a wake-up call. The trouble is, who is going to remove the glue from their seats?

organisers of cycling events should pay R6.00 per participant to CSA - ie the Argus would generate R220 00 in levies - the owners of the Argus refuse to pay the R6.00 per rider over to CSA but instead they hand out over R8 mill to charities.

I am not sure if you are congratulating or condemming the Argus organisers/PPA?!

Way more than that ends up being 'handed over' to CSA-related projects and racing, in one form or another each year. But you knew that already, I am sure.

That the Cycle Tour refuses to be bent over a barrel is laudable, in my opinion. That they have to justify this every year is so stupid. It wastes time, money and energy.

Seems like the organizers are happy to milk the same Cow (riders/members).As for PPA they don't have the courtesy to answer an email, that's another topic, not for now.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the forum. I was hoping for a better response to our problem. To the cycling bodies concerned, well... I suppose you don't have the time. You have the next event to organize. One would think you would be tied of the song from Abba "money, money"  To fellow cyclists let's continue on our next ride. After all, all we want to do is cycle.
