Good day guys.

I would like to start doing mountain biking so i need a bike, i dont want to spend about of money on my first bicycle. My budget us R8500, I would like to know, which is a better buy, a silverback slade 4 R5000 or the silverback slade 3 R6500. And then I also saw a Specialized bike in the shop for R9500. Please any recommendation welcome. And also I am 1.7m tall but weight about 140kgs. Should I get a small or medium bike

I agree with dexter. For a budget of 8500 you can get a much better bike second hand. It might just take time. Im 1.63 and ride a medium.

Have a look around for a slade 1... seen a few of them pop up under 10k recently

Especially now that guys have received bonuses :-)

Hi Lynn welcome to the dark side :)

My first 'proper' mountain bike was the Slade 4 - I unfortunately was a tad too eager beaver and walked out of the bike shop with a shiny new bike that was too big for me - I'm 1.63m and I bought a medium. I ended up selling it a few months later at a huge loss :(

I then bought a silverback Splash 1 - ladies specific frame probably same component level as the Slade 4 - also in a medium( again I don't know why) - I've been riding the splash for 3 yrs, apart from the tubeless upgrade and a cassette replacement, it's served me well. I've only recently upgraded my bike. If any of the silverbacks on sale have been well looked after, try it out for size - according to the silverback site you should fit a medium but I find their frames (especially the top tube) to be a tad high - while some people will say stand over height doesn't matter, trust me, if you're starting out, it matters when you need to dismount and hop off the saddle in a hurry.
