Double D bike racks

Hi all

Has anyone come across Double D bike racks? (Couldn't find anything on the hub using the search function!)

http://www.double-d.biz/towbar-mounted-carriers

I'm looking at their 4 bike one?  I like the Thule ones but these Double Ds are less than half the price on takealot:

I'm particularly keen on the tilt function....I played with a Thule one today and it was so smooth and easy.  The Double D one above looks just like the Thule ones but I don't want to buy something and find out that I should have spent the extra cash on the Thule.

Any info/advice welcome!

Thanks

Pop in at CMH Volvo in Town and get yourself a Volvo branded Thule rack. Have a look HERE.

+1 for this. I got the Volvo Branded Thule rack - it is identical to the Thule Velo Compact 3 bike carrier for 8k. And they deliver for free...

Great thanks for this.

I called in this morning and unfortunately their offer is over and the prices are back up to ~R12,500 for the 4 bike carrier which is comparable to the Thule ones.

Incidentally they only sold 2 during the offer so you both must have been the ones who got them!

If anyone has any experience with the Double Ds then I'd appreciate any comments.

Thanks

Bad luck I guess!

Had a look at the Double D racks on their website, I gotta say they look pretty well built and sturdy to me!

I am using the 4 bike rack from them. It is not as smooth as the Thule but for the price you paying it is worth it. The drop function works well. Also had good service from them when a boot broke ( my fault ).

I had a double D a few months back and it failed badly. Luckily I was only going about 30km per hour and was less than 1km from home. Bike was also not badly damaged. The arm holding the bike just snapped off and this on a smooth tar road. I now have a Thule and will not look back. I can see and feel the difference in quality and the bikes hardly move when on the back now.

I wrote to Takealot and suggested they relook at supplying this brand as it is clearly unreliable. Another issue is that they say it locks but neither lock did anything.

Thanks for the replies Kdb and Jono.

Wow that's very concerning Jono, I really don't want that to happen with 10s of thousands of Rands worth of bikes on the back.  The reason I posted here is that there aren't any around CPT that I could take a look at and get an idea of the build quality.

With other brands the forum is full of people saying they just bit the bullet and went with Thule but I'd never heard of Double D.

I think I'll also bite the bullet and buy a Thule for that peace of mind.

Thanks everyone.

Just on bike racks, I have a Thule that I bought a few years ago.

Our last trip of over 3000km, my bike was a bit destructive with our Thule.

The wheels have bladed spokes so the increased wind resistance broke all nine wheel holders for the front wheel that kept twisting in the wind.
