  1. For anyone considering taking the plunge with the Bose QC25s on onedayonly today I can highly recommend them - I've had a pair for about two years now and love them! A colleague has the QC35s and, while they're wireless, the lack of a switch to manually turn off noise cancelling is frustrating for her (apparently you can do it through an app) I solved for the lack of wireless capability on the QC25s using this awesome device: https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Bluetooth-Adapter-QuietComfort-Headphones/dp/B01MTQGY69 Works a treat and you can't notice it is there.
  2. So I'm not an overly regular poster/reader of the hub and so amn't aware of all the letters John has been getting! I'd have loved to have stopped to chat with him but wasn't able to. I'm more than happy to point it out in person too - In fact I was called a "f***king Irish c**t" on my ride today when I pointed out to someone how they nearly ran over a pedestrian shooting through the zebra crossing that myself and a car were stopped at - that gave me a good laugh Good point - if they don't care in person they may not care on the internet. However, if my "Dear John" makes one person thinks twice then I've no problem that I posted it. What I witnessed a few years ago has burned into my brain and I would hate anyone else to have to witness it or a family to see what I saw. Yay for Christmas trees!
  3. I was driving into Cape Town this morning and drove past a guy on the road going down the hill opposite lagoon beach. I’m just posting this on the off chance he reads it to implore him not to become another statistic. 1) you had a blue flashing light on the back but you were pretty much invisible - I only saw you as I came within about 10 meters of you - not enough if someone is speeding/on their phone. 2) there is no yellow line/hard shoulder there - however there is a perfectly good bike lane on the lagoon side of the road - please use it. I’m not into posting stuff just to moan and troll - I’ve seen a cyclist after being crushed to death by a vehicle - your actions were setting you up for that to happen to you. If you see this please please don’t become a white bike. Thanks
  4. Thanks for the offer @ Thanks for the offer @cyclenut, really appreciate it but I'm going to decline as, despite my wife's protestations, I'm very keen to construct my own now! Thanks all for your tips - I personally love the wall hanging options but I have something similar in my current garage and the kids (6 & 4) just aren't able to "park" them - I'm hoping for something that's easier for them to park their bikes (and scooters). Watch this space!
  5. And here was I feeling like 7 bikes was too many @mikeking @loudmac - I've been googling like mad since your first post and my DIY creative juices are flowing - will post a pic of the final product (which will fall somewhere in the middle of my grand plans and my wife's "it's only a bike rack, don't waste time or money on it" attitude!!)
  6. Genius!! Thanks @loudmac I’ll give that a go!
  7. Hi all Can anyone please suggest somewhere/someone in the Cape Town area that might sell/make free standing bike racks for multiple bikes (to store them in the garage not carry them anywhere - kind of like the ones they have at schools etc). There's currently 7 bikes in the house (not all mine!) so I'm looking for an efficient way to store them! Thanks Simon
  8. Thanks for all this. @hairy - the Bike bus sounds awesome, unfortunately it’s too late for me but I’ll definitely try join on mornings when I’m heading in later. Good call re point gym - a downhill freewheel never killed anyone. I’ve also found contact details for someone in the FNB building so will update here if I hear back.
  9. So getting an entry to the 2018 DC plus moving further up the West Coast means that I now need to stop procrastinating about cycling to work and start doing it (at least a few days a week!) The two things that were stopping me were 1) Cycling through paardeneiland - I know I can make a plan about an alternative route - shouldn't be an excuse (alternate route suggestions welcome though!) 2) Shower access - this is actually my biggest deterrent. I know people say baby wipes/shower from a bottle etc but that just isn't an option for me - I need to shower! My office is right at the bottom of Bree Street (opposite the FNB building). We don't have a shower in the office but I know that the FNB building has bike park/showers but I presume this is just for tenants - can anyone confirm that this is the case (or who/how to contact to confirm?). Any other suggestions for options around that area. Another option is Virgin Active Foreshore which is a few blocks away and is a possibility - however I'd prefer to shower close to the office rather than need to hop the bike again in my work clothes to cycle to the office. Any suggestions from seasoned commuters welcome! Thanks
  10. @ChrisF - are you planning on selling the Momsen? My almost 6 year old is at the interim stage between needing a 20 and a 24 so I'm looking to pick up a 20 inch for him - and with trigger shifters already installed I could be interested ;-)
  11. To the two cyclists cycling side by side in the road (and taking up the whole lane) past the Milnerton flea market in the direction of Blouberg at ~10.45 yesterday - you're idiots! I just don't see why there's any rational reason why anyone should cycle on the road there?! I get that avoiding Paarden island one needs to make a plan but the cycle lane is great from the flea market (and the road is super tight) - please don't become another statistic - you'll only have yourself to blame!
  12. Awesome thanks Milky - jeez that was some ride - bet that coke tasted great ;-)
  13. Wow - thanks everyone for the brilliant information. We're somewhat tied to Rhebokskloof as we have a brunch beside there straight afterwards - but Welvenpas isn't that far away so perhaps we could consider there too! Thanks again
  14. Hi all - so I did a search of the site and any info I can find is a few years old. Myself and a mate are planning on heading through to Rhebokskloof on Sunday to do a fairly lengthy ride as part of our preparation for Sani2C. Does anyone have any thoughts/suggestions on the best combination of the various trails that will give us a good long ride (>50km) without too much repetition? Also, from what I could find online one can gets permits from 8am - is there any way of getting them earlier like an honesty box? (I've contacted them but got an "out of office" bounceback) Thanks for any suggestions
  15. Now I know for definite today is Friday! Thanks for all the advice - I will put my big boy pants on, down a beer and see how I go - worst case scenario I fail miserably and crawl to a professional with my tail between my legs!
