droo Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Nope, there will be no alu nipples anywhere near those wheels that is for sure Just checking. There are plenty who still haven't got that memo.

Any thoughts appreciated. (PS: I live very close to sea, apparently in max corrosion zone, the roofing company tells me to wash down my roof after a SE to keep the sheet warranty valid!!)

(PS: I live very close to sea, apparently in max corrosion zone, the roofing company tells me to wash down my roof after a SE to keep the sheet warranty valid!!)That was a problem I had with the AC Wide Lightning wheels. The alu nipples corrode and crack very fast. Within a year. Now they are noisy and some spokes are loose. I still need to think about what to do with these wheels, sell as is or have them rebuild and sell then. But they have to be done. The advantage of rebuilding your new wheel right away will be that you will be able to reuse your spokes. Once corroded the nipples may seize on the spokes leaving you to buy new spokes as well... SCD Posted January 10, 2017 Author Posted January 10, 2017 Just to add, I would agree with David wrt round spokes. The CXray is a waste of money on an mtb wheel. Not only for the reasons he mentioned, but also an mtb tyre and rim are an aerodynamic disaster area, then just for good measure, you are probably only doing half the speed you would on a road bike, so any potential aero saving would a quarter of what is left.I actually agree. However with the Alpina Flat DB1.5 currently available at the price of a round spoke the cost argument is temporarily dismissed
SCD Posted January 19, 2017 Author Posted January 19, 2017 Here we go. The wheels arrived. Spec as described in the original post.Weight 1620gr including steel valves and rimtape. The tubeless tyres - Spez Ground Control Grid 29x2.3 front and Fastrak Grid 29x2.2 rear - popped on with a handpump. Wheels are stiffer than my AC Wide lightnings. First ride was awesome.Attakwas on Saturday will the first real test
