Epic fail in my 2nd FTP test

Maybe you fatigued etc, so many variables that contribute to a performance test.

I'm with John on this one.  Remember, you could have pushed a harder gear and gone faster, but power was lower.  Power = torque + cadence so if you pushed a harder gear, your cadence would be lower.  This could be one variable for this. If you know your Threshold Power and Threshold cadence set for this FTP test, this may not have happened.  BUT....seriously so many variables here to mention.

Thank you for the feedback guys.

I think its like you said the circumstances!

I did the long test with

3 x 15 sec sprints

2 x 1 min

1 x 5min

1 x 30 min ( Which the last 20 min is taken)

This gives a good breakdown of what needs to be worked on.

in terms of FTP a 30% difference is MASSIVE.

From my understanding entire concept of FTP is to determine your maximum power over 1 hour of riding.  To make the test more doable (not run above your lactate threshold for too long which will require a rest day afterwards), they have worked out that you can estimate your FTP by doing an all-out 20 min test and multiply that power number by 95%.

what this means is that if you drop your effort by 5%, you should theoretically be able to sustain your effort for 3 times longer...  At 30% less power than your previous FTP effort, you should hardly sweat...

I agree, that's like going down from 200watts to 140. Pretty sure there are some variables that may be effecting the result. Rest well and do it on an IDT, not as nice a riding outside but a more stable environment to test in.

Yea I did 5 min on the IDT after that ride and was up to 285 average Watts.

I contacted Garmin and they are sending out a field tech to come and check that my setup is correct with the pedals.

Great service from them!
