What to buy for a young teenager starting the sport

Hi everyone,

 

I am currently trying to help my niece purchase an MTB.

 

The bug bug bit whilst riding her kids bike one mostly gravel roads and she now needs to upgrade to something proper.

 

I have asked around at my lbs and the recommendation was one of the following two:

titan calypso nova 26R

Momsen rxl260

 

They are almost identical in price (R4000)and spec.

 

F. Derailleur Shimano TZ21

R. Derailleur Shimano TZ50 for 21 Speed

Shifter Shimano EF41 for 21 Speed

Brake Levers Shimano, included with Shifter

Brakes Mechanical Disc Type, 160mm Disc Rotors Front and Rear

Cassette Shimano TZ21, 7 Speed

 

Do anybody have some input in terms of quality/durability. Or can maybe recommend something else in this price class? new or second hand?

If you want to buy at R4000 I would never buy new.

 

My Bike Mechanic said you get a better bike/frame lighter etc secondhand at the same price you'll have to pay for a new bike. 

 

I bought a great Sola 4 for a great second-hand price. 

I spent an additional R400 for a new cable and general maintenance.

 

I was also trying to find a Scott Scale 40 at the time.

 

The Sola 4 and Scott scale were recommended by the experts here.

 

I set up alerts on Gumtree and OLX for I few makes I considered and waited until they met my needs.

 

I am sure the fundis here will give you more options.

2nd hand 26er best here on thehub

 

I'm sure someone on thehub near you would be willing to have a look at any 2nd hand bike if you feel unsure.

What size? My wife is selling her titan lady specific bike. Nothing fancy but has 3x9 an hydraulic disk breaks. Paid 7 for it 2 years ago. Will sell it for 4. Used 3 times.

My wife is around 1.75 meters am sure the bike is a medium. It's a titan calypso sport series trail an has done all of 200 kays. I am in randburg close to the dome
