bike part lingo

The whole thing is a "road bike brake caliper" and the lever on the side is a "road bike brake caliper quick release" which, like you mentioned is used to open up the "road bike brake caliper".

How is the search for break ( ) levers going?

Slowbee - are you building up a bike, or only wanting to convert a road bike from drop bars to flat bars?

a mix of projects.

up(s)killing myself to fiddle on Mrs Slowbee's bike and possibly convert this to flat bar.

trying to build a CX bike - but need somewhere to start, and figured knowing what the part names are would be a good start.

a single speed project ..... looooooooonnnnnnnnnng in the making.

and finally, my own mountain bike in case it needs fixing in the middle of the karoo, with blue wire, duck tape, cable ties, a mini leatherman and some allan keys.

The reason I ask, is that if it's a current road bike then all you need to do is swap out the handle bars, grips, and shifter/brakes - the brake calipers would already be in place and only requires the cables to be removed and reinstalled on the new levers.

Not sure if the groupset is Shimano, Sram or Campagnolo - but if it is Sram, then consider the grip shift gearing instead of the traditional rapid fire/trigger style shifting. That way she doesn't have to remove any fingers from the grips. I know of a number of woman friends that struggle trying to shift up (okay, this is on a MTB, rather than a road bike).

To bring this up again.

V brakes come in centre pull and side pull.

So what are cantilever brakes?

Do you have a pic of the 2 types of v brakes you are referring to?
