Flip Flags? Opinions and experiences

I see in the latest PPA newsletter there's something called a flip flag available. I've never seen anyone using one of these out in the wild.

 

I was thinking this morning as I enjoyed the mist and beauty of the dawn about how most drivers are actually pretty courteous towards me on the bike. On my various early morning routes the cars that I encounter generally overtake safely, yield to me when appropriate and so on but on almost every ride there's one fool who risks my life because he's in a hurry or oblivious or ... and I wonder if this product might help save me from that one idiot.

 

Anyone use them? Are they inconvenient - I don't mind looking like a dork - but I do want to do everything I can to avoid aforementioned idiot.

I used one when i did a trip from Cape town to Mosselbay...I did feel a little more visible.
