Such a pity. I remember loving those Bianchis during the cyclelab rides! Sorry for your loss!

Bit of a bugger up this whole situation.. From the premise of entering, to security guard not knowing anything and the manner in which they must have been removed and packed into a car suggest some very strange circumstances. Hopefully you all get pretty replacements, but some serious questions need to be asked.

And why oh why do people still consider a bike on a rack secure?? It just isn't! Take some extra bike locks, or even cable ties. Anything that will make your bikes the most hassle to removed will be the best way to discourage a thief.

I agree with the extra locks, last night when checking my thule clamp for damage i noticed a cut on the rubber, thought it was a tool mark but when i opened the flap i found pieces of my carbon frame inside the cut. This shows that the broke the frame trying to get it out of the thule bike frame as i made sure the clamp was pretty tight around the down post but as you say , more security is better.

I am still puzzled - maybe okes don't want to give away their secrets but how do you get the bike off a locked rack quickly and relatively quietly?  I know bolt cutters work but they have to be big (I've tried a small one when I lost the key to my cable lock) and I know a grinder works (duh) but it's noisy.  Taking the whole rack off with the bolts is going to be time consuming and not that easy, even with power tools.

What I have not seen is just blikseming the rack and prying it open with a hammer and crowbar but that would surely be noisy.

They just broke the frames ripping it out of the clamps, but this must have made a noise as well, can not see how the security did not hear anything standing 10 meters away....

To me it seems as if they do not care about the frames due to the serial numbers but will sell off the components, wheels, di2 mech system, groupsets etc.

really sad to trash a great frame just for the small parts and at what price ..

You're forgetting that carbon can be repaired. Even bad repairs can be covered up with paint too.

Can't believe no one saw or took note. Security must have been involved and some seriously well practiced individuals doing the task. I doubt many hubbers could rip apart a carbon top tube, especially silently.

I had a look at the little notice that I I was issued by the guard at Valverde when I when I arrived. I'm struggling with images but essentially it reads that :

Valverde is aware of a bike theft gang operating in the area, and that cyclists should store their bikes in the car or keep them in sight at all times. The gang knows how to remove bicycles from locked racks, so cyclists should not assume that bicycles locked on racks are safe"

thanks for this, i had not notices the fine print as we usally arrive early when it is still a little dark, 6.30am. The security know me well and have seen my bike on the back of my double cab in the thule stand many times and never mentioned a word of warning. My question is if they know there is a problem why do we not see more guards in the parking lot watching the customers vehicles and bikes. We will not be going back..

Thanks for the info - I think security / car guards are either intimidated or in on theft. That was almost certainly the case when I had the inside of my car cleaned out on the Durban beach front.

At valverde we pay to park aN their discriminatory parking policy of only VWs allowed at the top area annoyed me so I stopped going there. They are aware of the problem aN allowed an Avanza to enter sans bikes an leave with 5 requires some scrutiny I reckon.

Btw those guys riding without helmets were legit. One was on a specialized too.

Sorry to hear, this sucks the large
