3x10 Setup

My chainrings are done on my Giant XTC 29er. I have been browsing the classifieds and online stores for new chainrings and obviously found plenty of options.

First of all, I see my current setup could be for a 9 speed? As my big ring is 44t, or is this a dangerous assumption? I contemplated going 2x10 but to be honest, I love having the range and riding away from my buddies on fast downhills (tar), and spinning my way up trecherous climbs.

So, I see you get 9 speed triple chainrings and 10 speed ones.

Will this work or am I missing something?

Or should I rather get this?

With 3x it's more important than 2x to have the top 2 chainrings from a matched set so that the chain pickup ramps match/synchronize and allow fast shifting when you need to jump from the smallest to the largest chain ring, whether you really need that though is also something to consider. If not then just mix and match any chainrings with the correct bcd.

With a 2x setup it doesn't matter I have a 2x 10 Sram crank with a slx 9sp middle chainring(from a 3x9sp set) as my big chainring and a 24t Sram 10sp ring as the small chainring. It shifts flawlessly, those chainrings replaced a set of Xx chainrings and I could barely tell the shifting difference if any.

I'd put a wanted ad in the classifieds for a set of 3x chainrings, there must be a good few new or near new sets lying around in tool boxes because so few people ride 3x anymore and it's common now for guys to get new cranks and go straight to 1x setups with a narrow wide chainring.

Rule of thumb - keep to what your current set up is designed for.  You can get away with a lot of variation but usually with some compromise.  3 by setups were usually run with 32 or 34/11 cassettes.  Changing the chain ring or cassette sizes can influence the derailleur performance.  You should be able to get the right rings for 3 x 8, 9, or 10 speed.  You can often get away with using rings one speed up or down but you may encounter chain problems like the chain skating on the ring when shifting from a certain gear on the cassette.  My 2c

Was able to get SLX rings 42/32/24 after posting wanted ad on classifieds. My current rings which are done are 44/32/22. Not sure about the middle ring on both but the big and small ring sizes I do know. My current cassette is 11-36.
