Disk maintenance question

Jeez, so much effort with disc brakes.

Why on earth have they put them on road bikes?

Because they're better, more tire clearance, potential for better frames, easier to use carbon hoops daily..... The list goes on...

I read this thread with interest and agree with some advice and disagree with others . Im comparing the maintenance to vehicle discs and pads . Cleaning of discs on our equipment is essential as they are slotted and exposed to sand and road grime when ridden . A bit of soft hosing off should get rid of embedded sand and then a soft micro fiber cloth to wipe them down will stop scratching  of the disc . The sanding of pads is not a good idea as you might end up with a unevenly faced pad and that will put uneven pressure on the high spots of the pad and lessen the braking . Putting a pad in the oven to get rid of oils must be questioned as the pad material is bonded with a resin or glue to the backing  plate  and heating it could compromise  this ending up with a pad that comes lose when braking . When squeaking occurs on car brakes it is often a case of the leading edge being too right angled  and putting a small chamfer edge of about 30deg on the pad and this   gets rid of the squeal . I dont know what the minimum thickness of discs are but this could also result in squealing as the vibration will increase and create a resonance .
