Advices on road cycle routes around Western Cape

I hope I can get some assistance from the forum on creating a tour for myself and a couple of international guests ahead of CTCT in March next year. We are looking at doing a week of riding and plan to stay in some cool spots and enjoy some great meals and wines for lunches and dinners. We have a transport/bike racks/support vehicle courtesy of our better halves. We will also need to include a spa visit or two and some other stops at places of beauty/interest etc.

My challenge is that I don't know some of the roads and need to establish quality, width, traffic volumes, safety etc of the roads that we include. I will likely do a detailed itinerary and post that to fine tune but will start with an outline.

  • Day 1: We intend to leave Cape Town and by car head up west coast taking to our cycles later in day to ride through to Paternoster for our first overnight stay. Any ideas on where to start cycle, which roads etc?
  • Day 2: From Paternoster to Riebeeck Kasteel to overnight there. Again which roads etc?
  • Day 3: From Riebeeck Kasteel via Wellington over Baineskloof to stay around Wolseley.
  • Day 4: Probably visit Tulbagh and Ceres (by car) and then head towards Montagu (R46) riding the stretch from the N1 along the R318 to Montagu. Stay in or around Montagu?
  • Day 5: Ride a route around Robertson/Bonnievale/Macgregor - really not sure what would make a good ride and is safe and not too strenuous!!?? Overnight at good guest house in area?
  • Day 6: Drive to just outside Worcester and then cycle via Villiersdorp to Franschhoek to overnight in Franschhoek.
  • Day 7 Ride early from Franschhoek to Stellenbosch?

I would really like any comments on our proposed route and even places to stay etc but mostly on route and road conditions etc.

Much appreciated in advance!!

I'd start with a proposed route on a map, then do some heavy consulting of Tripadvisor as well as any available websites for any places that seem suitable. That goes for accommodation and places to eat. Then use Google streetview to get a sense of what the roads will be like that I'd planning on riding (perhaps do this bit first)

That should get me most of the way to a decent trip.

This is my plan of attack on this. good luck and let us know what you find out and how it goes.

I did a ride to Langebaan a while ago on the R27 West Coast road, but I would cut through the West Coast National Park going into Langebaan - just for the absolute beauty of the scenery on your way through to Paternoster Day 1

Thanks - as I said I am mostly interested in recent experience of the actual roads and any suggestions on roads in these areas as I am sure some are amazing and others probably less than ideal. As regards food and stays agreed there are many sources of info and I already have a couple planned!! I will certainly post final route and the outcome!!

Great idea!! Do you know whether you can enter the park at the West Coast Gate on the R27? The Sanparks website is unclear and it seems that you can maybe only access at the Langebaan Gate. Thanks.
