  1. Was thinking of doing this on my ride back to Tokai. Question is, where would you ride to from finish to safely join up on the route again? Maybe from Vredehoek/Zonnebloem somewhere?
  2. Yes Chris.
  3. Where would be the best place to find parking? I'm not sure if 1000 cars descending into that marked parking spot is going to be going too well on race morning. Parking anywhere else in Durbanville seems to be at risk of your car being broken into these days at races...
  4. I am having the hardest time with these new updates on Multiply. Firstly, I have also lost about R300 worth of Vouchers I was saving up to redeem Dischem vouchers. Second, I really need someone to explain to me this new Safety Score % where I need to get over 1500 points to get to the desired 30% cash back. It tells me I need to update my Momentum Insure details for 100 points, which should theoretically be a given for each month of the year, but nowhere do find the place where I can update or confirm my personal information to activate these points...?
  5. Welcome to SA. I live in Tokai and the trails here are really nice - you may find a few sections after recent heavy rains where you may have to carry your bike for a short distance to clear rockslides, etc. I can just start by mentioning that all trails and routes are mostly safe over weekends with influx of walkers, cyclists, etc. You are more likely to run into trouble 10h00 on a Tuesday morning when the mountains are quiet. From the Waterfront you can do 2 routes to Tokai area. 1 - You can ride along the road that runs all along the beach through Camps Bay to Hout Bay. From there you can get into Constantia side via Constantia Neck, where you can access local Green belts and make your way to Tokai trails. Riding in Tokai you can go up to the Tokai Mast (+-800m elevation from the gate), ride into Silvermine and do a loop around there, you can go down what is called the Donkey Trail back into Tokai and ride all the fun trails back down to the gate. Tokai is not very well sign posted if you are new to the area, but people are very friendly and always willing to give you advice and directions on which routes to take to the most fun parts of the trails. 2 - You can cycle from the Waterfront to Table Mountain and cycle to the Kings Blockhouse. You will find many cyclists on this route most late afternoons and plenty on weekends. You can go back down the mountain into Newlands Forrest where you can cycle through the trails over Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens which ends/starts at Constantia Neck. Same as above, you can access local greenbelts, etc. from here to Tokai trails. Both of these routes will give you 100km easy with something like 2000m elevation. Possibly a lot more if you decide to go to the top of Tokai Mast. Finally, I would stay off the cycle path that runs from the city to Milnerton/Blouberg beach. However, from these areas you would also be very close to the Tygerberg Trail Network.
  6. When you say the "Deer Park Trail", do you mean the road on Table Mountain that takes you to King's Blockhouse? I don't think you will have any trouble over a weekend and should be chock-a-block with walkers, runners and fellow cyclists. Most weekday afternoons from around 16h30 it should even be perfectly fine.
  7. Ai tog, so disappointed about this. Was last there in 2019 & really looking forward to a lekker race this time round. I really hope they front up and offer us free delivery of the merchandise we ordered.
  8. I hear the coast around Mosselbaai area is very nice at the moment 🤪
  9. Looks quite windy and never in a supporting way from behind... I hope that the AccuWeather predictions for Rain on Saturday and Sunday doesn't make it too problematic as I am still 99% set on doing this with the Gravel bike. Seeding seems a bit odd though. Very happy/surprised to have been seeded in A Batch Then the missus who did Argus in around 5 hours chilled ride also gets seeded into A ? Then, finally, I'm not quite sure what Uniondale Pub is gonna look like around 21h00 on Saturday night. Methinks 'n paar van ons gaan moeilik opstaan Sondag oggend.
  10. Even if the rains have stopped, the damage is done. I don't see this road improving from now until tomorrow morning based on the video evidence. I'm leaning more to forfeiting at the moment, sad to say
  11. Oh joy!! I was in 2 minds if I'm going to be doing this on my gravel or mountain bike. Now I am in 2 minds if I even want to do this at all. Either forfeit my R500 entry or spend R3k repairing my bike at the bike shop next week. Any one else considering this?
  12. I think you should also weigh up cost vs convenience. If you are planning on purchasing a Wattbike, they aren't cheap compared to an IDT, but easily adjustable for both you and the missus to make use of. The downside of an IDT is having to put your bike on and off each time if you don't have a spare bike lying around you can just keep on the trainer all the time. I've used Zwift, but I find it a bit distracting from what you are actually out there to achieve, especially if you only have a set amount of time, ie. 45min or so. I much prefer Wattbike Hub style and just ride according to the numbers on a workout plan. Wattbike also has the Pedalling Effectiveness Score (PES) to help maximize your training. If I could afford it, I'd have the Wattbike in my home.
  13. Thanks @Prince Albert Cycles, your advise is definitely worth holding off until the last moment to commit to what bike to suite the terrain on the day. It would be invaluable if you could post a final update around your last trip in early September through the area.
  14. Might have to get cracking then on that entry... Lions Karoo to Coast Embraces E and Gravel Bikes in 2023 A hot debate was sparked in 2022 when the K2C had an unofficial E and Gravel bike contingency participating. Events owners, the Lions of Uniondale and Knysna have recently made a decision to embrace an official E Bike category and this has been welcomed by the riders.
  15. I've had a similar issue happen to me coming down Silvermine reserve on the road around the dam - there are a few speedbumps and ditches for water draining where I hit one with some force and my tyre was toast. There I learnt not to over-inflate gravel bike tyres when going offroad.
  16. Perhaps a consideration and see if my frame would allow some 2.1" mtb tyres.
  17. I do recall the descent after the 58km waterpoint going into the forest being a bit bumpy and some potholes or even the occasional stormwater speedbump in place. I can imagine attempting to hold onto some wheels in front and negotiating this at the same time being quite difficult. Would you do it on a rigid again? I understand I am sacrificing comfort and a lot of probable wrist/elbow pain, but ultimately I probably need to decide if I can make up the time on a gravel bike on the flats and climbs especially if I'm necessitated to take it easy on these techy areas.
  18. Hi guys Hoping to jump onto the K2C thread here and ask an honest question here about attempting to do this year on my gravel bike, seeing as they're now allowed. The comments above did not seem to be too convinced about the prospects of racing on a Gravel bike and I'd like some input on Pro vs Cons or just why you would advise against it altogether. I've done K2C on 2 previous occasions on a mtb, however, my current mtb is more of an Enduro bike and I'm obviously looking to complete the race in a faster PB time. The obvious pitfalls I can think of would be Ou Wapad descent, as well as the looong descent from about 18km to 25km at extreme speed. Finally, maybe a couple of potholes around Knysna forest area. I have done a couple of Tokai mast descents and it is notably more scary on a gravel bike vs mtb, so I do understand I'd need to take it a bit more rustig on the descending parts. Hoping for some good feedback.
  19. As much as I have experienced the same pains as mentioned above with Safe Days, I have found a little loophole that takes a hell of a lot of effort, but is effective. I mostly now keep my location switched off and only put it on when I go on my route to work. I then track my driving for a short 5min or something and then switch off my location again. Weekends I track my route to the park where I take the dogs for their walk or for the first few km's of my morning ride. It's a lot of effort and you have to be switched on almost the entire time not to forget, but I'll suck this one up and jump through the hoop to get my R6k bonus at the end of the year.
  20. Can vouch that riding Tokai on a Gravel bike is not a fun experience. Coming down from Mast at speed is already quite hairy that you will probably need new brakepads the next day. I also hit a ditch pretty hard on a rocky descent which instantly gave me a pressure puncture, which I needed to replace. Pretty expensive day out for me
  21. I just logged in yesterday to check and I see that the Safe Days requirement has jumped up to 80% halfway through the month. I have a bunch of drives scoring 75% from home to work and then shorter rides scoring 95% and then total score for the day 78% = no Safe Day All these hoops needing jumping through and moving the goal posts is becoming really tiring.
  22. I've ridden on Wortelgat road before and into the reserve. You quickly start hitting a few sandy sections and before long you are pushing your bike through thick sand constantly. Just a side note that there have also been a few incidents on Wortelgat road with cyclists being knocked down. Quite a lot of speeding on that gravel road with puffs of dust making visibility very poor. Then the sun also hits that road at very awkward angles early morning and late afternoon. Can't say that I particularly enjoyed cycling on that road.
  23. Yeah a 3rd option would be an upgrade to 11-speed But I also forgot for a moment that her mtb is Thru-Axle and my road bike is Quick-Release... Thanks for the painful reminder
  24. Hi Sam I don't have any solutions for you, but I am in the exact same boat. I have an indoor trainer that I use with my road bike. I am 1.9m tall and my wife is 1.6m To complicate matters even further, my bike on the trainer is an 11-speed and her bike is a 10-speed. We are left with 2 options, which is to buy a bike somewhere midway between both of our sizes and just fiddle with the adjustments every ride (both maybe left a little uncomfortable) or just to bite the bullet and buy her an IDT too (not really feasible at this stage with finances).
  25. My best Strava year to date: Distance 5,932.9 km Time 287h 6m Elev Gain 78,220 m Rides 154 At one point 7000km and 90 000 elevation was on the cards, but a lazy last 3 months of the year had the final say.
