David Marshall Posted November 17, 2017 Share Cool beans, I hear your point. What is the difference between these two? http://summitbikes.co.za/index.php?id_product=595&controller=product http://summitbikes.co.za/index.php?id_product=551&controller=productNeither of those. This is the one http://wheelsmfg.com/bb86-92-outboard-abec-3-bb-for-24mm-shimano-cranks-black.html I am sorry, but I cannot see the difference between the two. According to specs, they look similar. The one I recommend screws into itself in the middle of the BB housing which reduces future problems like noise and play when the BB housing wears. It will wear due to torque on the crank and usually the problem becomes evident on the non drive side first. Just a warning you do need two oversized bb tools to fit the screw type one. ParkTool BBT 29. If you have a good relationship with your LBS they might lend you the tools. Rushsport has the BBs in stock so Summit should be able to order for you. David Marshall Posted November 20, 2017 Share http://www.instructables.com/id/Hollowtech-2-bearing-change/Instructions refer to outboard screw in BB cups, not plastic press fit BB cups as in this case.
Andrew_Smith Posted November 20, 2017 Share Thanks for all the advice David, appreciate it. Never knew BBs where so complicated. Just another question, the one you recommended (BB86/92 Thread Together) needs those specific/specialized tools, correct? And the normal one (BB86/92) does not need the tools, except for a rubber hammer to knock it in, I presume? In that case, would you say it is worth it to go for the Wheels MFG (not the threaded one) over a cheaper PF BB (Shimano XTR for example)? Also, price wise, is the Wheels MFG Thread Together one more expensive? Edited November 20, 2017 by Andrew_Smith Munimula

Don't know about the tool, or whether it's worth it. The wheels bb is about 100$, so waaay more expensive... And the XTR BB is R600. So the price gap between the two isn't huge.
Hairy Posted November 20, 2017 Share if you can, get the "screw in type" ...... costs a little now, but will be cheaper in the long run and should sort out any creaking as per David Marshall's posts. Andrew_Smith

Andrew_Smith Posted November 20, 2017 Share Agree. Do keep in mind, that one is the normal PF model (not the threaded one - 'screw in type'). Like David and Hairy said, they recommend I go for the threaded one but will need to sleep over it.
Andrew_Smith Posted January 13, 2018 Share Long overdue update: Turns out the culprit was my pedals (mentioned by @ricochet_rabbit) all the time. But the BB was completely toasted when I replaced it with the new one. After fitting the new BB, the sound resumed and I had no idea further what it can be. Follow the advice of one of my riding mates to use elimination to trace the sound. I started with regreasing the chainring bolts and using another chainring. No luck... I basically gave up and left it for a few weeks. After installing new brake pads, we removed the pedals seeing it was bone dry. Regreased and walla! Annoying, squeaking sound gone. It was just a pure joy to ride a silent bike again, really missed it.
