Creating more space for larger bottles

On a number of bikes I have had it that there is a lot of wasted space between the bottom of the bottle cage and the BB Shell. Depending on the layout of the suspension that leaves a lot unused space as it seems that most bike manufacturers choose the place the riv nuts about halfway up the frame…. On many frames this then forces you to carry the smaller bottles.

For my most recent bike it meant that I could with much effort manoeuvre a 620ml Camelbak into the cage, and required even more dexterity to extricate it from the cage for a drink.

I know that there are plenty people who wish that they could fit a larger bottle in the frame since not everybody has the capability of a camel when it comes to the consumption of fluids.

After some research I found that the Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 Battery Adapter Mount (SM-BA01), would allow me to move the cage down further into the frame. Unfortunately no shop that I contacted could supple me, so I purchased a couple from CRC and shipped them over.

The attached pictures will show how far down the cage has moved now and it is now possible to fit a 710ml Camelbak Podium.

very nice!!

Thanks very much.

One also has the option of getting the B-RAD mount from Wolftooth which does the same kind of work. https://www.evobikes.co.za/wolftooth/wolftooth-b-rad-mounting-bases-2-slot.html The B-RAD system of Wolftooth is nice because you can also bolt on their toolkits which are made for B-RAD.

The Shimano drew my attention because of price... it is about R30 more expensive than when it was on sale a month ago. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/za/en/shimano-ba01-di2-battery-mount-adaptor/rp-prod34650

thank you i have been looking for this solution!

have the exact same problem on a Trance with the same water bottle

In that instance when you install the bracket to move the cage down, just ensure that the shock lockout does not touch the bottle or the cage.

We installed one of these on a friend of mine's new Merida 140 and when the suspension moved the lockout pinched the water bottle. We move it up a couple of mm's and the problem was solved.

Another relatively cheap solution I found, but I did not like very much was the KTM X-Wing bottle cage... These cages sit the lowest in any frame without comparison. Seems that KTM designed them specifically for their bikes and the mounting holes provides quite a low mount option.

I just do not think that the KTM X-Wing cage looks as good or as fitting as the Cannondale SSL Cage.
