Another Cyclist hit

Dude, glad you still with us.

I was taken out exactly like that years ago. Cycling towards Altona Cafe, heading in the direction of Cape Road. As all cyclists do, every couple of seconds you look down to rest your neck especially while in the earo tuck. Looked up, lady was right infront of me as she turned into the Cafe to buy bread and milk. Slam, over roof. You get the idea, MTB buggered. Didn't break anything though.

Let me tell you what you must do, and what you will do:

1) You won't quit cycling, trust me its a drug. You'll sit moping around all day if you don't ride.

2) Sell your road stuff, and buy a lekker mountain bike.

3) Come do some offroad rides with me, you'll enjoy it 26 times more than road riding.

No don't get me wrong I would love to continue to cycle and I find myself constantly changing my mind on the subject.

I will give myself a month to make the decision.

I would hate to give up something I LOVE so much ,because of the fear of being hit again.

One thing I want to do is to thank "Pedal Care" as an insurance company. My cover started on the 1st of June and I had the accident on the 3rd and they have been excellent so far in trying to sort my claim out.

So the money is there I must just make up my mind what the way froward will be.

Wisecrack, dit is great om te lees wat jy skryf! and as a relative newcomer to the sport I take heart in the fact that you received so much support. I can also understand why Mountain biking is winning so much ground. I still like both mtb and roadSmile. Good luck on your recovery and take your time.

wisecrack, i'm very glad that you're home - it shows you're healing up. just relax and take it easy and focus on healing before you focus on getting back on the bike.

jpdub, luminous stuff doesn't always help - trust me... i got side-swiped off my motorbike yesterday morning and i was NEXT to the car and i was wearing my ThinkBike reflective vest (jellytot vest or moses jacket - whatever you wish to call it). if a driver isn't looking s/he wont see you - on your bicycle (like wisecrack) or on a motorbike (me yesterday) or in a car (me in my blue tazz last year 3rd of april)

Hey SP

Agree with you completely on the lumo stuff, was just a bit of humour. Like you said if they dont see there is nothing one can do till it to late.

I know it wrong but I have hurled a H20 bottle or 2 at blind driver and that doesnt even seem to work.

We should start riding with those Air Horns and blast the hell out of the dumb ass drivers.

Cheers

jp, i was too busy trying to get away from the dude to even hit the hooter, and trust me, my little commuter has a loud hooter (it's a street scrambler so even the bike itself is fairly loud)

luckilyu the principle of the matter is sorted - he apologised and his family karked him out and they said they'll pay for hte repairs (brake lever was R130 and labour R0 - thanks pocketbikes)

So 'n Otter - how on earth can a motorist say they did not see a cyclist - I think they are totally in denile an they tend to forget that many years ago most of them were also cycling to school or just for fun.

I'm glad that you are better off than Bernard Kapp who was also in a very serious accident and are still in hospital - see Forums - Rand & Rafe.

Keep it up and even if you dont cycle again- get all your cycling buddies together and stand up against these selfish motoristsWink
