Again, thanks for all the feedback, it really is helping me/us make an informed decision.

From all of the above comments I think 650b might be the sweet spot as I think she would be put off more by not having confidence on tricky single track as opposed to having to pedal harder on the flats - I will ping her this thread though and she must make the call.

I must say that Embolden 2 looks very cool with good specs - any idea who offers Giants for test rides in Jhb?

Dannygirl - had to chuckle at your comment that if I am able to work the shifters and gears that so can she as that is what I told her - after the innaugural ride however she told me that that may not be the case!

How are you liking the canyon?

I've been eyeing the lux, but I think at this point in time it's too much bike for me to handle.

My partner says she can feel a huge difference in the handling of the bike compared to the Scott 29er. The reach is much shorter so she sits more upright than on the Scott and she reckons that the suspension set-up is better on the Canyon. Strangely enough she also says that it feels like she's sitting higher off the ground on the Canyon than the Scott.

We haven't done any technical stuff other than some jeeptrack next to the railway line, but so far she is quite chuffed with the bike. We plan to go and do Wolwespruit in the next week or so to suss everything out before we tackle the Sani...

We specifically looked at the Spectral because of its more relaxed geometry...

Thanks for the feedback.

Good luck with Sani
