MTB derailleur on a road bike

Hi guys.

My bike currently runs a Sram Rival 2X11speed setup with an 11-28 cassette.

I am looking to fit an 11-36 cassette on the back as I am planning a holiday somewhere in Europe.

My question is will the Wifli midcage accomodate this? If not, can I fit a MTB derailleur instead? For instance a Sram NX 11speed? Are there any other changes I would need to make.

Secondly, if I opt for an 11-32, would this be fine with the wifli derailleur?

Thanks people.

The wifli rear derailleur will certainly allow you to run an 11-32 cassette, possibly even 11-34, but I think the 11-36 may be too large.

The 11 speed NX derailleur will not work with your rival shifters - 11 speed mtb components have  a different pull ratio from road.

However, a 10 speed rear derailleur such as a GX or XX one will work as it has the same pull ratio as the rival shifters. The movement of the derailleur is goverened by the shifter (11 speed), so it will work. Just make sure to adjust the limit screws accordingly.

Lastly, what crank are you running? Could also make sense to use smaller blades?

Both the 11-32 and 11-36 can be had in the road cassette range (https://www.sram.com/sram/road/products/pg-1170-cassette), so no change will need to be done. Just a straight swap. The WiFli long cage mech will handle the range.

SRAM 1x and 2x rear mechs have slightly different pull ratios. If you use a larger mtb cassette, I'd recommend switching to a 1x mech (Rival1, Force1). It will function and shift if you don't, but certain gears will grind (I have tested).

Pretty much what Schnavel says.

A few years ago I spent a week cycling in France running a compact crank 50/34 and 11/28 cassette and had no problem with the hills and that includes climbing Mont Ventoux

Might be easier to change your front blades to compact else fit a compact crank

I'm already running compact so maybe 11-36 is going a bit overboard then. The 36 is basically just there as a bail out just in case.

I think I'll just go with the 32 cassette then. Just seems less of a hassle.
