Time for the next topic that originated from my original CSA thread.

What is being done out there by the regions, clubs, teams and CSA  to developour  juniors?

I imagine these would be that magic age group 16-18 where most kids are still at school and are starting to dream dream big.

I don't have the facts as my kids don't cycle so I am not at cycling events.. but what do the numbers look like between 14,16 and 18 year olds.. because the age between 16 and 18 is when kids are really stretched when it comes to school work and sport and often the sport that demands most of their time is the sport the give up.

At normal (non School ) events very low .At Gauteng Spur MTB events, High schools only you get 600-700 riders I am told and that is after they have split gauteng into 3 regions to reduce the numbers.

Sorry, added this to the wrong post

R1500 is about the costs of other school sports camps so in line with that. If i can remember correctly the hockey boys paid R1800 for a camp that involved a lot of qualified coaches and training plans and coach seminars for the school team coaches etc etc

Who the hell came up with the first amount.. that was crazy and what ends up happening is only kids that can afford that insane amount go and not neccesary the most talented or hard working kids.. so good that they found alternative accommodation.

My kids also decided not to make cycling their primary school sport but both still cycle and regularly ride  with me.

The son of an old school friend decided to take his cycling seriously. He undoubtedly has the ability but soon enough found that regular school made it nearly impossible to get the right training in. So, they decided to go the home schooling route. From that point on his cycling took off like a rocket because everything else got structured to accommodate his training. Nutrition, rest, books, lessons, everything else supported riding. He finished matric, is now in his early 20s and rides for a professional team, part of the time in Europe. The effort that made it possible was his own, that of his parents and the coaches they got for him. Nobody else helped with advice or money. That is pretty much how it works for all sports except rugby and cricket, perhaps soccer also?

The school where my youngest are (nearly finished there) have mountain biking as a school sport. They train together and they compete as a team and as individuals. However, it really only caters for the average rider. The teachers involved are not coaches and they cannot really take really talented youngsters beyond a certain competitive level.

Currently the school has one particularly gifted young  potential future mtb star. His father is the one who trains with him and the family invests in his future because anything above local competition is never going to be arranged by the school. To the schools' credit, they do mostly tolerate his needs by allowing him some leeway missing other sport. But at the end of the day it is the parents who fork out the money to get him to provincials, SAs' etc. They buy the bikes, pay the coaches, plane tickets and they give their time. The school is happy to use him as a poster boy for their cycling success, but I have to admit that they do give him recognition for his achievements.

(Edit: Sounds just like my own experience with gymnastics a couple of years ago and currently with Beattbox' daughter and hockey)
