Slight hijack, but partly the same question:

Will be staying at 8 Bells from 19-24 December... what are the riding options from there, if anyone has been there/done that? Gentle MTB/gravel. I have already booked a day to play Robinson Pass (big-boy-panties packed).

Tim, two options close by.

Head south towards Hbos on the tar R 328. Just 1 km from Eight Bells at Hillbilly's pizza turn right on to a nice gravel rd. Small part of the Atta in reverse . Just keep going . A loop that turns south and then back east. Some steep hills. Comes out at a small village called Brandwag . Here you get the same tar again . Left. Head north about 14 km ( a Jack Russell in ambush, sometimes) and you're back at Eight Bells. Total I guess about 40 kms. On the R 328 left on the gravel is a good idea . The cars do 140 plus.

No. 2

Behind Eight Bells is a road that leads up to Leeukloof.  Head north on the tar ,about 3 kms. Or the pine forest just north of Eight Bells ( tar has a very narrow section of about 100 m that I don't like). The staff can help here. Turn right into Ruiterbos and follow the gravel rd through the village (south) . Very nice scenery close to the mountain. Some downhill and then a steep climb out of the valley. At the top t junction go right at the 'main' gravel rd ,right again when you hit the tar and back north to Eight Bells. Again a guess  about 25kms.

Or reverse both.

Pic Leeukloof.

The Ark is close to Brandwag.

Liking option 1. Looks like if you cross the tar at Brandwag, you can get back virtually all on gravel, past Botlierskop. 54km, 900m, perfect!

Correct. Its right on the tar.And almost immediately left . 100 or 200 metres and left on to the Geelbeksvlei rd.

Five or six kms and you're on tar again. Take the first rd left. A steepish hill with only a few metres tar, then gravel. The second rd takes you to Botliers itself , but you can only ride up to the hotel, road closed for game and so on.

First road takes you back to R 328. Some nice climbs.

Hope this isn't too much explaining. Enjoy your ride.

Rode both routes. The Brandwag route is long and flipping hilly and country-toadish - but lovely.

That Leeukloof loop is gorgeous. Rode it lots. Both ways. There is a smallholding for sale on the river, slapbang in the middle....

Hit Robinson Pass both ways, the one time. 10km climb out of 8 Bells. Loved it, but not recommended if you don't like the smell of diesel or the brush of the odd coast-bound Venter. Crazy narrow.

Pleased that I could help Tim. Leeukloof is nice and who knows, with internet you can work from anywhere these days.
