Another Mtb helmet fret

So I’ve tried on a view helmets over the past couple of days, and the ones that impressed me most were the Bell Super3S and the Ambush. I’m leaning towards the Ambush from a fit and built quality perspective.

Looked at the Uvex too and while its a seriously nice helmet, I dont think the chin protection attachment fittings are as good as the Bell’s and its just going to annoy me to be honest. Those plastic clips will definitely break at a time I can least afford it

The Specialized just seems to be a better designed and built helmet than the rest and fits my groot kop best - is also one of the lightest. Would love to see the MIPS bontrager rally as well before making a call, but so far the Ambush is the fav. Havent tried fox and probably wont bother

Also check on the crash replacement policy. Not that anyone would want to use it, but it is a nice little insurance policy in the event of an otb moment (touch wood) and a good show of faith from the manufacturer's end.

Can't really go wrong with any of the options you're looking at. However I always consider the above to inform my purchasing decision.

In short my formulae goes like this;

Fit/comfort?

MIPS?

Crash Replacement?

Price?

As far as the Bontrager Rally goes, perhaps also take a look at the Bontrager Quantum. Personally prefer the styling plus it has a MIPS option and costs a fair bit less than the Rally.

Leatt FTW

I have a Fox Metah, nice helmet, has loads of vents but still gets very hot and the visor is not adjustable.

I've decided to go for the Specialized Ambush MIPS ANGi helmet. Also thought I'd share my observations for the benefit of others in the same situation.

My search covered POC Tectal Race Spin, Specialized Ambush MIPS ANGi, Bell Super3S, Giro's, Bontrager, Nuvex, IXS, Scott, Catlike and a few other brands.  I didnt get to try out the Bontrager and Leatt.

My thoughts as follows:

POC

Pro

- Globally regarded as one of the top brands

- Excellent air flow and venting

- Light weight

- Great design

- SPIN technology competes with MIPS

- great protection low down in back

Con

- I have a 595mm kop, which fits into their "XL-XXL" sized helmet.  This means that i come in on the smaller side of what this size bracket can accomodate, meaning there is a lot of room for a groter kop.  The result is that it is not a snug-fit for me as some of the others.  I could not find a "medium-large" size to fit.

- Spoke to some of the bike shops who stock them, and there are apparently some issues with the supplier and some of them are phasing the brand out from their shops. My conclusion is that its probably the best brand to buy if you stay in Europe.  If you need local support, it will most probably be a mission

Specialized Ambush MIPS ANGi

Con

- Very Light

- Great looking helmet

- Excellent air flow - deep air flow channels with very good evaporation vents to reduce sweat dripping on glasses

- MIPS and ANGi collision detection technology

- best fit for my pip

- thoughtful design (integrated adjustment knob, highly adjustable visor, adjustment knob ensures snug fit around your head and does not just squeeze the rear part which is the case for most helmets)

- 2 year crash warrantee, excellent dealer support

- great protection low down in back

Con

- maybe not as good looking as the POC or the bell, but this is subjective.

Bell Super 3S MIPS

Pros

- Great looker - one of my fav

- love the removable chin protection

- MIPS

- well built

Cons

- on the heavy side

Fox Metah

Pro

- Looks great in a brochure, less so in person (pro and con)

- price

Con

- Limited air flow it would appear - not as good as POC and Spec

The rest

Pro

- price

- some designs are nice (IXS) and some not so (Scott, Giant etc) - subjective of course

- MIPS

- air flow not close to Spec and POC

Con

- protection low down in back not as good as POC or Spec

- Not as well built as POC and Spec
