sorry for the hijack, but i can get bruce springsteen's nebraska outta my headBig%20smile:

I saw her standin on her front lawn just twirlin her baton
Me and her went for a ride sir and ten innocent people died

From the town of lincoln nebraska with a sawed-off .410 on my lap
Through to the badlands of wyoming I killed everything in my path

I cant say that Im sorry for the things that we done
At least for a little while sir me and her we had us some fun

The jury brought in a guilty verdict and the judge he sentenced me to death
Midnight in a prison storeroom with leather straps across my chest

Sheriff when the man pulls that switch sir and snaps my poor neck back
You make sure my pretty baby is sittin right there on my lap

They declared me unfit to live said into that great void my sould
Be hurled
They wanted to know why I did what I did
Well sir I guess theres just a meanness in this world

KV, have you considered getting a women's specific bike? If you need help, just post a pic of your girlfriend, preferably in a bikini or less, then we can help you decide if she needs one TongueLOL

He he, nice try. Looked at lady specific bikes, they are either very expensive or very heavy. Also curious why they never fixed the spelling on the Nabraska. Gonna swap that derailleur on the sly for sure!

My girlfriend has a 2007 Mongoose Tyax Super (bought @ Sportsman's Warehouse R3999/ set up at LBS). Great kit on the bike. She has got the bike for more than a year now and it has treated her very well.

She has not clocked that many miles on the bike and all components have practically no scratches on them. We then saw on the weekend the women's specific Specialized Myka HT (R4600), but the kit is as entry level as can come....however, the bike is much lighter than her Mongoose. Also, she felt immediately comfortable on the bike. She also loved the full suspension version of the Myka. We then wanted to the buy just the frame of the Specialized (HT or full suss version) and build all the Mongoose components over onto the Specialized and sell the Mongoose frame for a few hundred bucks, but unfortunately, Specialized does not sell the frames of these bikes seperately.....so...she's in tears at the moment......

She's now hoping for a Trek version.....apparently Trek can "make a plan". Pity about the Specialized....she really loved those Myka bikes....

to be honest, i reckon the whole women specific thing is a marketting tool. you can achieve similar riding reaches with shorter stems and playing around with saddle positions.

that said, they do work particularly well if the woman is on the shorter side.

If the bike feels right, you should seriously consider getting it.

You could still swap the components between the 2 bikes and then sell the old bike.

At the right price, I am sure you will find a buyer. Try the classifieds here on The Hub.

@holy roller: That was my initial approach to the whole "women's specific" thing.....what difference was there to the old chick bikes with the top tube welded lower down the seat tube....? But I must say that the difference in feel (for her) is night and day....

@mountain lion: Clearly it has inspired her to want to MB more. Its all she talks about since the weekend....getting her new Specialized....and how she'll eat up the "technical" single tracks etc....obviously this attitude is just what I need when going on rides with her....so, yeh, I'm keen on getting her the bike....or let's say...I'll pump in the "extra" petrol money to get the full suspension version. So yes, we are wheeling and dealing to make this "project" work.....I'm really sad for her as she really thought she'll be able to get the frame.....but we'll check out other brands this weekend....

My girlfriend is very "girly"......things like pink bikes/pink flowers on helmets and stuff she diggs, but maybe just to irritate me...The GTw Avalanche 3.0 is such a bike which she thought was "sooooo coooool" but immediately noticed the lower specced kit and stuff.....(look this one only has 24 gears, mine has 27).....same with the Myka comp....

glad that it works for her! as i suggested in my post, i reckon wsd bikes work better for women with really short upper bodies.

Yes, sorry 'bout that...I was actually agreeing with u but noticed that I didn't state that. Yes, she has a shorter upper body and I agree that the design works well for her...surprisingly.....Smile

holy, when i was looking to replace my mtb i test rode a WSD trek - and hated it... i felt as if i was going to fall over the front of the handlebars!!!! it was also a lot heavier than the "normal" bikes in my price range and specced a lot lower. that was when i fell for hte merida, to have those hopes dashed due to non-availability of anything small enough for me.

kevinV, take her to test ride ALL the bikes in the price range. that was how i ended up with my beast. i am (and always will be) a Giant fan, but i couldn't afford the top end anthem and that was the only one that the weight saving really was worth it. i test rode from GT's to Merida to Trek (yep, despite being an anti-trek person i did test ride one) etc etc until i found that the nicest (for me) was the Mongoose.

the right bike will chose her.

I want to surprise her with the bike as a birthday present. She has been wanting one for a little while. I agree with what has been said about lady specific bikes being a marketing gimmick to a large extent. A small frame with the correct stem and a ladies saddle should do the trick. The Silverback still seems like a good option, but I wanna see one in the flesh first. I have a month to look around, so will certainly keep my eyes and my mind open before making a final decision.

Good to see that so many hubbers have girlfriends riding MTB!

Eish! Looks like Silverback is really popular. Still looking but sold out wherever I go. Can't find a small frame. My LBS has a large Dakota, and it looks a really nice bike so gonna keep looking. If anybody sees a small Nabraska or Dakota in the Western Cape please let me know!
