Hi guys.  I am fairly new to mountain biking.  Currently i am still riding a 3 x 7 setup and struggling a lot uphills with this setup.  So now I am in the process of buying a new bike with a 1 x setup.  The new bikes are coming out with 1 x 12 with a 34t x 50t setup.

At the bike shop they can swap the 34t chainring for a 32t or 30t.  For a newbie, which chainring is the best to go for, without upgrading the chainring in the near future?

Thank you

every1 struggles when they start cycling irrespective of gearing. you will get stronger and fitter. However, that ratio you running is tough especially for some1 starting out. If you go with the 34T upfront you will have lot's more granny than you currently have.

I wouldn't go less than 32T upfront as you may find yourself popping unplanned wheelies going up steep climbs.

On your 3x7(24x28 like you mentioned) your granny gear ratio in red.

On a 1x12 with a 34T chainring and 50T at the back your granny gear ratio in green.

Climbing will be a breeze for you on the 1x12!!

Ok so it seems the general consensus are suck it up, get stronger and go with a 32   :whistling: .  Thanks for all the information, very informative.

If the 32T still don't work for you, I'll happily swop you my 30T that I took off when I fitted the 34T...but I doubt you'll need it. 2-3 weeks training on the 32T and you'll be strong enough to forget about this thread...until you start spinning out, then we'll talk about 34T vs 36T vs 34T Oval

Will keep it in mind.
