I'm considering upgrading from a RS Tora 302 to a Tora 318 (on a brand new bike: 302 stock > 318 upgrade). The "google" research I've done suggests that the diffference between the two forks is the air suss in the 318 + weight saving. Also for a light rider like myself (65kg) an air shock, apparently, offers better suspension than the coil version (not sure really). I'm not sure what the upgrade will cost on a new bike (heard +/-R1k).

The extra cash injection for the new bike is not that big of a problem (Ouch), however, it then puts me R1500 short of a "race ready bike" with a Recon Air XC fork Confused.

So bike:

Stock standard: R9k

Upgrades: R10500

Upgrade Model: R12000.

Is the upgrade worth it? Or should I just go for the more expensive model. Or, should I just forget about the whole upgrade thing and "save" myself the extra R3k food money...?

I intend alot of XC/single track riding (no "racing fit" yet), no DH, freeride junk etc....

Tora 318 air is a good fork. i bought one a few months ago with poplock for R2500. normally are around R3500. Go for the air if you have the option. only prob with the 318 air fork is that you have to internally set the bikes travel between 80, 100, 120mm. best to get it done at LBS. 318 also features motion control which allows you to tune your fork with poplock adjust.

i ride the tora 318 i weigh 64 kg but if the race ready bike for 12000 is worth the price increse then go for it but otherwise just go for the upgrade on the cheaper bike

also the spring shock gives a much harsher ride and seals go quicker so an air shock is the better option even if its gonna cost you a little more

I don't really understand this part......Ouch....well, this is my dilemma....

u c, I've heard another argument from a LBS owner that bikes under the R10k should not really be a headache decision as ALL r made in Taiwan (+/- a China here and there)...so...one should just concern urself with the standard kit and upgrade as much as u think its worth....if at all.....now I see his point, in that bikes at that price range (GT/Mongoose/Merida/Schwinn etc) will do the All Mountain job "with ease"...so the stock kit is the main driver here....otherwise....throw urself into the lower end "race" league....almost like a wannabee R20k HT machine "feelgooder"....aargghhhh...I don't know....add R600 and the carbon Schwinn is looking very reachable...........aaarrggghhh.....R5k more......damn...!!! I'm going nutts...!!!Dead

pity about that....

my feeling is buy the best bike you can now' date=' 'cos to upgrade is a killer...

Another nice option is the opus fast 1...

With that kit I'm sure its way out of my league....very nice bike though....I was not planning on going 5 digits for a bike, but after I blew R3500 on my first schwinn I promised myself I'll go the extra mile the next time I buy a bike....well "next time" has arrived and now it seems I have to go the extra 2 miles...

I'm also in favour of spending the money up front. Usually you will get more bike for your money if you buy a better bike, than if you upgrade in time. If you HAVE to.

If you are still at the stage where you buy a bike/component because someone else told you that it will be better... rather ride the stock one till it breaks and THEN upgrade. At that time, you will be better suited to make the right choice.

Having said that, if you have the money...
