Shipping a bike frame to SA - looking for advice

Hi all.

 

I've recently been lucky enough to get my hands on a new bike frame, one that actually fits my 6 foot something body.

Now, I'm in the lucky position to have a Boardman Pro SLR frame lying around the garage that is WAY too small for me - I should be on a 59/60 - this is a 50!!

 

I had built the bike up but had never actually ridden it. 

 

And here comes the question - how could I ship it over to SA from the UK, to donate to someone who needs a frame, can't afford one, and has massive passion? I wouldn't want anything for the frame and fork, I would only want that it went to someone who would put it to really good use - and that does not include selling it on for a pretty penny!

 

So any advice guys?

I feel I should add - the frame is in very good condition, few small pieces of silicon around the cable inlets (was running Di2 wiring) , and a few minor scratches...would also include a headset, seat post, stem and BB (yes, I know its a PFBB30, but hey, such is life!)

Perhaps never mind... I've been doing a bit of internetting, and the prices that come up seem to be insane!! £400 to ship a frame from UK to SA?? Complete madness.

It's not cheap. There might be some shipping companies that can do it sea freight but the problem you face is always the first item is the most expensive and the subsequent items are cheaper. Eg a moving box will be £89 but 3 boxes will be £120 in total. Don't even bother looking at UPS or Fedex.

 

Aramex Global Shopper is okay and easy to use. a frame will cost about R1100 + VAT + any extras to get over in about 10 days (with customs etc). Issue is that this is mostly used for new items and the value for customs is based on the invoice you upload. I guess you could write your own invoice as I doubt anyone will check. Occasionally if it looks too cheap they might query, google the actual cost and then base the customs and fees on that.

Any friends coming over who would bring it as a favor? Then you just need a box or even better a bag.

I would go with Aramex Global Shopper. I think it would be one of the cheaper options

Find a mate who is flying to SA and claim a favour/buy them alcohol.

 

It's a popular route - there must be someone in your network doing it soon.
