Commuting from Cape Town CBD to Claremont

I live in the city bowl..is it mostly safe to commute via road bike to Claremont in the morning and back in the afternoons? Considering both traffic and theft.

 

Would using the mountain be better/safer?

Either up and over the mountain via Rhodes men or lower main road, liesbekparkway and then campground road.

 

Main road a bit busy and no cycle lane.

I do it most days, it's surprisingly quiet cycling against traffic on lower main, past the river club etc.

Traffic was my first thought, but yeah, it would be against the heavier traffic.
