Hi, I am looking for a reasonably priced 24 inch bike for a girl and I want the lightest bike for her, to last a few years (she's 8). Narrowing it down to the Scott Roxter and the Momsen JR100 (because they are available on this site second hand), but the Scott seems to be 11kgs and the Momsen is 13.8? Significant weight difference I think, but is it real?

Lora for better or worse they grow through these bikes QUICKLY ...

Ours had the 24" for 13 months ... then it was time for the next one.

Weight .... yes, kids bikes are stupidly heavy ....

Gears ... grip shifts works for a short while only.  I have seen kids tears because of these stupid grip shifts.  Trigger shifts are only a few hundred rand.  Well worth it !!!

PUNCTURES .... recently a few hubbers have posted about tubeless tyres for 24" .... not sure of availability.   4 years ago we used tubes with "Sludge" in it.  Worked very well for us.

For the rest ... get the one they like, be it for the frame colour or seat or whatever ... if they like it, they will ride it

Thanks so much Chris and Peet! This really helps. What a minefield when buying secondhand - one would know if they were in front of one - have found more research and more dilemma the more information I find about these bikes! But your sensible comments put things in perspective, very grateful for the time you took to reply.

Which every way you go, also keep an eye out for some hydraulic  disc brakes to put on if it does not come with them, it can help reduce weight as well. We have a set from one of my bike upgrades that has been moved three times now, just moved onto my daughters Momsen JSL40, makes a massive difference to their confidence having brakes they can trust and use with ease.
