Hey everyone. Perhaps there are some very knowledgeable hubbers that will know what BB thread / what BB my dad’s ALPINA steel frame will take? Or how I can try and identify what it will take.

your help is appreciated

thank you JP

I believe that Alpina is an Italian make, so it's most likely the old Italian standard:

  • Inner diameter: 36mm
  • Thread: 24tpi
  • Width: 70mm

Else it will be BSA standard:

  • Inner diameter: 33.5mm
  • Thread: 24tpi
  • Width: 68mm

Or how I can try and identify what it will take.

Take the old BB out, measure the ID and width with vernier calipers.

Alpine was made with different tube sets . Some Italian Columbus tubing with Columbus lugs and Italian bb and other were made from Reynolds 501, 525, 531, 653 or 753 tube sets with English BSA bb.
The only way to know the bb for sure is to check the tube set and the BB itself. Of the dimensions are stamped in metric then it is an Italian bb and both cups use right hand threads

if it is stamped in imperial dimensions it is a BSA bb with left and right hand threads for each cup.

if you are in Cape Town take it to Woodstock cycleworks and ask Nils to sort it out for you. If not make sure you find a mechanic who has been around a while and knows those bb’s

BSA is 34,9mm I believe

Thanks so much for this. It’s Reynolds tubing. I’m in JHB but I trust nils completely so will send down for him to replace the BB with something else. Thank you again!
