Attention Cape Epic riders

Are you ready to take on the Absa Cape Epic this year? Do you want to explore cutting-edge ways to enhance your performance and recovery? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you!

We’re conducting a pioneering research project, and we’re inviting you and your teammate to be part of it (both partners must enrol for the study. This study will investigate whether taking ketone supplements after each stage can supercharge your recovery. Imagine better sleep, reduced mental fatigue, less muscle soreness, improved appetite control, and optimized hydration—all while you conquer one of the most demanding mountain biking events in the world!

What Will You Do?

  • Before the Race:
    • Attend three laboratory sessions in the two weeks leading up to the Epic.
    • These will include a VO2max test, a 30-minute time trial test, a cognitive function test, body composition analysis and a stress questionnaire.
  • During the Epic:
    • Provide a urine sample each morning.
    • Complete a super-quick, questionnaire and have your weight recorded daily. This all will take less than 3 minutes
    • Take a dose of ketone supplement after completion of the stage, and a second dose at bedtime.
    • Participate in a brief 24-hour food recall, hydration assessment and additionally after stage 4 and 7 a cognitive function test.
  • Post-Race:
    • Repeat the 30-minute time trial test and stress questionnaire.
