Hi, I am visiting South Africa in October and want to take 2 new bicycle wheels to my son. (He ordered them in Australia) question is; must I pay tax on them if they are new?  Or is it OK, if they have been used?

Thanks, Aver

You will need to pay Vat on them but as bicycle parts they should be duty free.

You may be able to claim some tax back from the Australian side if you have the correct invoice and follow the right procedure.

Thanks. I'll look into it. 👍

Ride them a bit. Get them a bit dusty, take them in old wheel bags / luggage. Mention you are from Oz and intend returning with them if they ask any questions.

When my son came to visit us in February, he bought the bike here in Oz and took it back with him. He is used to traveling with a bike

He used to be a BMXer long ago and traveled to USA etc to ride there several times etc. When he gave up BMXing he did mountain biking which has since then progressed to road. The wheels are expensive and I would hate to pay VAT on their actual value. He is good at carting bikes around, I'm not 😂 Maybe I can fet an invoice wirh a cheap amount on and take that with me.
