RS Tora 302SL vs Manitou Black Comp 80

Currently I have the said Tora (100mm travel) on my 'project' bike but have a somewhat older Manitou Black Comp 80 (80mm travel) available.

Should I keep the newer Tora on or go with the Black? My understanding is that the Black is somewhat lighter but what about performance and the effect the 100mm travel vs the 80 mm travel may have on that sooper dooper Scott Yecora frame of mine .........

Just wondering. Having the Black serviced anyway as a spare fork so may just put it on just for the hell of it as it is my test/project bike after all.

Would appreciate any opinions ............ preferably on topic but I'll get over any hijacks ......

I'd stick to the Tora. From what i've read there don't seem to be any benefits in changing to the black. The Tora is a decent fork and if you're doing some freeriding or all-mountain riding the extra travel will help.

my 2 cents!

What size fork was the frame designed for? <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Check the head angle and then keep in mind that a 20mm change in fork length increase/decrease the head angle of the frame by about 1 degree.  The typical sweet spot for a XC hardtail bike is around 71 degrees and it reduces the more all mountain (around 69 degrees) you go.  So you must decide what type of handling you looking for.  The steeper head angle the faster it will handle but it will also be less forgiving on down hills.

The next question is if mere mortals like us(Me Embarrassed) will be able to detect the differencesLOL.

Why not go with the Manitou? 80mm is more than enough, and Manitou is way cooler than the Tora. Hell, I'll even buy the Tora from you for R1000 LOL

  • 3 weeks later...

So due to Lil' Ben having issues with his RS Reba team leaking oil on the weekend at Groot Marico and grabbing my FOX F100X terralogic till it's sorted I have had to put the Black on my S-works hardtail anyway.

Firstly I had the Black serviced by Johan Bornman, working sweet thanks man!

Rode it through Rietvlei zoo farm tonight and it is great, the steering seems a bit 'quicker' but not sure if that's just cause it's different. First time I ever rode with an 80mm travel fork and I'm a big guy (some of you may have noted .....). Using no preload and used about 95% of the travel. There's lots of technical stuff there so I guess it's all good.
