It should be said that a lot of the route has cycle lanes where it is perfectly safe to ride 2 abreast.

In the motor cyclists defence' date=' a large group of hogs came through (going to Teak Place I think) on Saturday morning riding in a perfectly respectable manor, it was a pleasure sharing the road with them.

Actually the part of that route used most frequently (the stretch from the lion park to Beyers Naude) does not have a cycling lane. It has a wide enough emergency lane in som places though.

The actual cycling lanes in that area are a sort of a catch 22 situation. It's nice that the lanes were introduces, but the quality of the road surface leaves one wishing that you had rather opted for something with suspension. You'll notice most people keeping right of the cycling lane for this reason.

As for the speeding bikes. Cyclelab's club route goes through that area so I ride along there almost every Saturday. At the time of day that the bunches pass through there (8-ish in winter) there aren't many speeding motorbikes. They only show up a bit later.

So if you are wise enough to stick to low traffic hours, you should be fine.

I'm not condoning their speeding either but I do feel for these guys. That however is an entire topic on it's own, so let's not hijack this thread.

My brother in law took me for a spin in his new Ferrari on that very road. I wont tell you what speed we were going but we had to slow down for some of the bikers.

Notice I did say Sundays...

There's pretty much no traffic on saturdays when I ride there.

When I ride there during the week I normally see an average of 3 other cyclists and funnilly 5 supercars
