"Twelve Olympic and three world records were broken in a quite unbelievable evening session.

Perhaps the starkest example of that was in the 4x100-metre freestyle relay heats, where the South African team, the Awesome Foursome, broke the Olympic record of 3 minutes and 13.17 seconds they had set on their way to gold in 2004.

It was only a pity that five other teams had broken it before them, with three of those going under the previous world record of 3:12.46, with the United States the new holders."

2004 olympic record broken by 5 different teams? Come on man... how can they NOT be on drugs??

haven't red all of the posts, but there is a significant weight of opinion to suggest that the skin suits are hiding something else.......... many many commentators have voice the opinion (not the commentators you find on TV, the onces behind the scenes, directly involved in sport)

Posted

not physically hiding something, but that the performance benefits attributed to the suit may be being used a smoke screen for some of the significant performances seen in recent times........

thats just Nike propoganda - sore losers!

dont think drugs are the answer to the new records, plenty of drugs in the last olympics to.

as for speedo cycling gear - isn't this what Zipp have been doing ??

Swimming is not like cycling. Swimmers build up over 4 years just for one meet. Thus, the recent good times are not necessarily to be attributed to doping.

This post was started with a very negative sentiment. The type of attitude which in my mind, is the whole problem with sport and doping nowadays.

People believe so strongly that to perform doping is needed. That is the message this post sends out.

Take Ricco for example, I don't think the  guy needed to dope. He is that talented, but somehow someone convinced him that he HAD TO dope.

If the SA team could break the record 4 years ago, why can other teams not do so too now?

I am by no means being naive here. Doping is happening, and much much more commonly than the public out there knows. But with this type of attitude we are not helping.

We must send out the message to young athletes that doping is not the way and that with hard work and pure talent you can go places. Look at riders like Chris Froome....

This type of attitude and postings piss me off frankly.

whitesox, I am not saying that 'all' improvements are coming form Doping - I am simply saying that many close to the sport are strongly suspicious of some of the performances being turned in, and the attributing of these performances to the suits.

Funny thing is, I grew up in a house with a 'professional' athlete for a father, back in the day when no money was made, except what you found in the generously given new spikes from international manufacturers of note.

Now I love sport because of him - all sport. Unfortunately he looks back on a career knowing that many of those whom he competed against were 'assisted'. He's never talked about it directly, but you can see the anger. No words need to be said. Hence my dilemma - I love sport, but will not have my eyes closed to the dark side of professional competition.
