I am building a carbon S-Works Epic and have been offered a build-kit which includes a Truvativ Stylo crank.

I have looked at it and the Truvativ Stylo crank is a bit heavier than the XT 880gm XT is 850gm.

Which should I go for? I have no experience of either.

What other options would you Hubbers recommended without spending too much?

I mean FSA carbon is nice but at R8000 its a bit steep.

Which XT are you refering too?

M760 or M770?

Anyways, Truvativ Stylo Cranks are pretty robust.THe ring tend to last longer than Shimano too. The BB Bearings are pretty good too but they do take a while for the seals to wear in and allow the cranks to spin freely.

You should be aware that the truvativBB and Shimano BB are not compatible

one is the older Xt gruppo and the other is the newer 2008 model stuff.

the model number is stamped on the inner ace of the crank arm, the bit that faces the frame.

I've only used the XT cranks (the older ones which I think is the M760) and they are brilliant. Have not had to replace the BB in over 4 years of riding.

So my question is: Am I better off doing a deal with the bike shop on the Truvativ Stylo so I can trade it for a new XT crank and pay in the difference (I don't know what the price difference is right now but I am sure they will squeeze as much as they can out of it). Just talking from a weight, quality,  durability, perceived coolness perspective, not price?

Jeez, long question!

Did someone say they want an XT crank + shifters (rapid rise) + disks + disk brakes (hydraulic) + XTR rapid rise RD (pulleys require replacement)' date=' all for the amazing price of R 2000?

Hmmmm thats a tough one to nswer.

Stylo is pretty good but lets face it, Shimano do cranksets very very well. they are the benchmark.

Stylo is sort of excellent value for money while Xt says that you've arrived as THE weekend warrior.

to me , either is fine. Id' ride the stylo till it falls off and then replace with XT.

On a another note, I am running and XTR M960 crankset and my old man, a Stlyo, he goes through a new BB every 5/6 months, thats after its been flushed out and regreased at least once. My bearings are still running solid after 18 months.
