Hi.

I had a grinding noise from my one STI on a ride on Saturday. Evert time I selected higher gear. but changing down was fine. smiley18.gif

About haly way through the ride (1 hr) all went smooth again no grinding.smiley1.gif

Can I spray a lube into the STA or is there more I need to check.smiley5.gif

I have Soarer STI's.

Hi

Check that the inner cable is not starting to break inside the STI. Usually one or two strands break about 20mm from the end and then it all feels quite rough and scratchy.

Cheers

Do not spray lube into the sti's. You'll collect even more dust in the sti's that will become a grinding paste and %^$# it up completely.

Yes, and if it breaks off inside you have a groot gemors.

Check the cable and if that is ok, squirt away. There are only two places on a bicycle where Q20 (WD40 - XD-007, it's all the same) should be used and that is in STIs/ERgos and slipping freehub bodies.

Sloppy explanation. My fault.

It is a freehub that doesn't engage when pedaling forward. It freewheels forward and backward. This is usually due to dirt and rust inside the freehub. By squirting a couple of litres of Q-XX in there you can flush out some of the grit and the freehub will work again for a long time.

Perfectly new freehubs that have been on the shop shelf too long also display those symptoms. In this case because the grease has turned very thick and needs some diluting with Q-XX.
