Besides' date=' what manufacturing defects would arise on a secondhand bike that would not have been picked up by the first owner?[/quote']

Picture this. Old oom buys a carbon beauty to get some excercise. He's knees does not like it after he put a total of 200km on the bike in the first year. He sells it for next to nothing. I ride the crap out of it. The BB shell comes lose from the carbon.

Insurance is like gambling. Either you put your dosch on red and black' date=' just black or on 0.

As for the frame defect. Para, I dont think it is fair to expect insurance to cover a frame warranty or the manufacturer to offer warranty on a second hand frame. It is the gamble you take buying second hand and saving cash.
[/quote'] You have no idea hoe true your words really are bud!! The only application to set it aside is that there has to be an insurable interest in insurance where there isn't in gambling!

You've answered your own question. You bought it for next to nothing. No/little risk.

I'm sure the warranty will be carried over to the new owner? If this were generally true nobody would buy anything second hand...i.e.cars!!

Nope, most frames have lifetime warrantys that lapse if you are not the original owner. Please correct me if I have this wrong.

And if you buy a second hand bike WITH the original invoice supplied (if it's a top end bike would the owner not hang onto this), how is the manufacturer to know you're not the 1st owner...?

Guys please remember that the manufacturer also has to cover himself in a way.

I don't know about the other companies and brand names in SA, but I can only speak for myself (Token ) - if there is a defect - and it really happened during the manufacturing of the part- the few times this has happened - I have never asked if it still belongs to the first owner.

If it is about service, you work around it. If it is a second hand frame and just outside the warranty period, then you still offer something - even if in the end it is a new frame at cost or something like that.

It is not standard procedure for us, but every case is treated and evaluated individually.

I suppose you have to go through the retailler. What retailler is going to lie about the invoice if he has been jimmy'ed out of a sale.

This is where your relationship with your LBS often comes in! So be nice to the owner and loyalty can make a difference  .............

The problem is buying a second hand bike often goes against building a good relationship. Tough one.

Some shops selling "boutique" frames have used ones where a customer has upgraded etc and they will honour the warranty.
