What could be the problem if there's a distinct knocking sound when pedalling - only happens on the right side though... I've already checked the chainring bolts, and checked that the pedal isn't loose.

Please tell me its not the BB..

Do you have internal or external bearings?

If you have a sealed BB then it could be the Aluminium housing of the BB chafing against the aluminium cups.

I usually take the cups off the BB, clean it up good, grease the inside if the cups and reassemble.

Mine does that all the time had my bike at the lbs 3 times already. NOW... i am living with it. I am using this sound now as a power gauge, the harder i pedal the harder the sound.. Great he!!!

Couple of things, it would normally be the BB threads in the frame, strip clean and regrease should solve it. If not try some PTFE (plumbers) tape around the threads.

Sometimes noises seem to come from different places, I had a knocking or clicking sound recently on each pedal revolution. Tried everything and eventually found that seat rails were dirty, cleaned them up and sound is gone so check everything, seat, seatpost and headset.

Good luck.

Long shot. Try to give the chain a good clean and lube. Sometimes the chain's links will make a clicking sound, especially after a lbs service. They clean but do not lube, it seems. It is felt through the crank and pedals, and one could swear it is the BB.

very interesting, had the same thing on my BB, was *&%$ myself thinking it was a cracked frame.

Just another BB question:

How can you tell if you got an English or Italian thread, without removing the Crank or BB. Is it written in the product code. I've got a Shimano BB

If it's not an Italian frame, it does not have an Italian BB. Simple.

HAHAHA... I was hoping it was as simple as that.

So soes that mean Campag only comes in Italian thread??? As it shouldn't be allowed on a non-Italian frame?

I had the same thing. A load tick tick whilst pedalling, only on right side - worsened if i stood and climbed or just stood and pedalled. And as you said...got worse the harder u pedal - just the same. That was with a normal clip pedal - thought it was my BB also. For me, luckily it wasnt - it was the damn right pedal only. It was something that came and went - and when it was there it wasnt a pleasure to even pedal. After upgrading to clipless it vanished - no more issues!

Yeah, its very annoying cos sometimes its there, and sometimes its not.. Murphy's law that as soon as you want to show someone how bad it is, it goes away...! Anyway, probably the best thing is just to get a good mechanic to check it out - which I will be doing ASAP..
