Well, for what its worth. i havent tried all the brands but i've pretty much tried both roof mounted and towbar mounted.

My comments are that the roof mounted ones are good but it can create some clearance issues while driving or when parking. As for fuel ecconomy, it just blows your fuel.

The towbar versions are in my opinion the best. The bikes are hidden behind the car so it help with the feul economy. There are two negative to this. It does tend to restrict your view to the rear and if its not the fancy Thule system, you have to remove the rack when wanting to get into your boot.

hope it helps.

In my experience roof is more convenient (if you leave them on the roof) but it does have a major effect on fuel economy (even with no bikes on ....). Also not ideal for long journeys, the front of your bike takes quite a hammering from insects and the like. Great care must be taken riding under anything (even trees etc.)

Towbar is better for long journeys and fuel economy!

BB, I find roof takes a hammering fom insects but does stay free of dust. On long trips I wrap the front end with clingwrap.

Just got myself a proride and this thing takes 20 seconds to load. Brilliant!

Oh, and by the way, I actually doubt that a tow bar mounted roof rack is more fuel efficient than a roof mounted one.

If you are forgetful, definitely go for a tow bar mounted one.Confused
