Front wheel creek

I'm experiencing a creeking noise coming from my front wheel only when I stand and pedal, I don't know if it is the skewer or the spokes.

The skewer is quite tight and the spokes seem to be ok and all have the same tension.

Can any one help?

So you've ruled out the bar/stem and headset which could also be the cause?

Spokes don't creak. A poorly built wheel will make come quick Krick noises when you ride it at first and then be quiet until it collapses. This is when the spokes untwist themselves.

 

A skewer can creak, especially these lightweight things. A proper Shimano skewer made of steel and clamped as per the instructions, wont creak.

 

Bearing with water inside do make crackling noises like dry grass burning or sweat wrappers in a cinema. This is rust particles in the grease getting cruched as the wheel turns.

 

Rims with poor quality eyelets that can rust do creak. If you suspect this, oil them and the creak will disappear until the next wash.

 

Start by eliminating the skewer problem, then look at your bearings.

Thanks guys, I'll start with the skewer .

I had Shimano Ultegra hubs. I started with a creak from the front which I chased from spokes, to stem, to bars to skewers. It eventually became a cracking noise which felt and sounded like a broken carbon stem. Bike shops couldnt find any noise, until the last bikeshop I took it to showed me bearings and all the related inners of my hub. They were so badly worn it was embarrasing. Spinning the wheel in my hands felt like rolling a jar of marbles.

 

Check your bearings asap.
